BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (BioCryst) is a biotechnology company that designs, optimizes and develops drugs that block enzymes involved in cancer, viral infections and autoimmune diseases. BioCryst integrates the necessary disciplines of biology, crystallography, medicinal chemistry and computer modeling to use structure-based drug design to discover and develop small molecule pharmaceuticals. The Company’s product candidate, forodesine HCl, is a transition-state analog inhibitor of the target enzyme purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP). Additionally, forodesine HCl is being studied in a Phase II trial with an oral formulation in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). Its another drug candidate, peramivir, is an inhibitor of influenza neuraminidase. Peramivir is in development for the treatment of influenza with two parenteral formulations, intramuscular (i.m.) and intravenous (i.v.). Its second generation PNP inhibitor, BCX-4, is in clinical trials.
